MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise

We are testing two new 16-inch MacBook's before doing a rollout across our organization. Under low loads (25% cpu utilization), fan noise will get annoyingly loud. We're not doing any GPU related and more routine work such as: using web applications, debugging web pages, Microsoft Teams conferencing (audio/video) with a handful of people, Photos downloading from iCloud, Mac Mail downloading a new mailbox from Exchange.

We DID NOT notice this on our 2015 MacBooks and this might prevent us from continuing the 16-inch MacBook rollout in our organization.

Interested to hear others experiences.

Tim, you mentioned that you bought several units, unfortunately I only have one (16-inch) and I can’t install the “b” version, do you think you can try installing the “b” version of macOS to see if that really helps solve the issue, someone here mentioned that it worked for him, so it will be great to confirm that it works, so we can stop worrying that we have a defective machine and wait until the next update. Thanks!!

" Wonder if they're getting a large number of returns... maybe for some of the issues we are experencing?"

Chances are very slim. I returned mine because I bought the Core i9 version with 16GB Ram. I decided that I needed 32GB Ram for Final Cut Pro X so I returned it and ordered the Core i9 with 32GB. Not everybody returns something because it's defective or due to having problems.

Most people don't make mistakes like that.

There is a tech bloger from Poland who uses CalDigit TS3+ with external monitor and according to him Macbook doesn't heat up only in clamshell mode (lid closed). When lid is open and external monitor is connected via CalDigit TS3+, Macbook spins fans to maximum and it's very hot.

Sorry, there is no english version, but you can spot the setup with CalDigit TS3+ on pictures.

The CalDigit dock is great for me in clamshell mode with dual displays. My computer stays quiet (but mine isn't loud or overly hot directly connected either) in clamshell unless I'm really driving it, which is the way it should be, and then quiets down when the tasks are finished. Maybe I just keep my rooms cooler?

Many of my posts have been deleted because of the secret information I've been posting. I apologize Apple.

Right now with the screen open I'm at 26C. I only have mail and teamviewer, safari and parallels open (paused). I'm also not connected to the dock.

FYI I noticed last night that if I had jAlbum opened my RFS wattage would be at 7 (disconnected from Dock), but when I closed it would drop to .08W. Apparently software can makes calls to increase or decrease when closed.

Another users of this forum have already confirmed that the dock CalDigit is not working. The loud fan and heating issue is still there even if you connect the MBP 16 to that dock.

Could you quote the user? Because I am the user that has 2 TS3+ docks and they both work just fine. There is no loud or runaway fans when having two 4k screens connected.

Is this is clamshell mode? The other users are reporting that it is working normally when in clamshell mode no matter how many monitors are connected but it overheats when the lid is open.

If you see no difference in heat/fans when the lid is open and connected to 2 monitors, is this because you are using the newer OS and that has fixed the issue or maybe your device is resilient to this problem?

i did a smc reset myself a few days back on my macbook pro 16 inch and while the fan is much quieter, heat production still seems to be hotter than it should be (it did seem like the heat production was less though overall).

as a matter of fact, i feel slightly concerned that the fans aren't spinning up cause it's hot to the touch and yet the fans remain quiet. i'm still going to be steering clear of an external monitor unless i absolutely need it or there's a new update that helps the issue.

i plugged in an external monitor for about an hour or two and the fans never got crazy, it was barely audible.

It was not the meeting we had hoped for. We are now waiting for our Apple Business Team to introduce us to an Enterprise Team. Each step of the way it is becomes more and more clear how siloed Apple is and how narrow each employees responsibilities are with very little info, interest or ability to communicate outside of their areas. Not super impressed.
