AirPods Pro Call Quality

I wasn’t too sure where to post this as they are still quite new,

but I bought the new AirPods Pro and the call quality is awful on them. I call my girlfriend daily and whenever I am outdoors she can’t hear anything I’m saying. She says the background noise is way too loud and my voice is quieter and sounds like I’m speaking with my hand over my mouth as it sounds muffled.

This has happened every time we call whenever I’m outside, so much that I have been having to shout down the phone in public so that she can hear me.

I tested the AirPods Pro call quality to my original AirPods (1st Gen) by talking on the phone with the AirPod Pro and then swapping them for the AirPods 1st Gen mid call, and apparently the call quality is 100x better on the 1st Gen. They do not sound muffled and my voice can be heard clearly over the background noise.

I’m unsure if I have a faulty set or if this is a fault with all of the AirPods Pro design. Nonetheless it is worse call quality than the first set for the person on the other end of the call. And yes I tried switching from Transparency and Noise Cancelling mode to see if that was the issue. It’s wasn’t. Hopefully this can be sorted.

This is a known issue, that Apple seems to be ignoring. See other complaints of the same issue on this site. I have posted about this as many others have. I returned my first pair as faulty to Best Buy and got a brand new pair. Exact same problem with the second pair, nobody can hear you clearly and you sound muffled or distant. Re-pairing, resetting, updating firmware on phone, changing noise cancelling modes, switching microphone from auto to L or R; nothing helps: so this weekend I will be returning my second pair also as faulty.

Hi AirpodsPro,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that your girlfriend on the other end of a phone call is unable to hear you, while using a set of the AirPods Pro. I can help point you in the right direction.

If you're experiencing this behavior with other contacts in a phone call, I suggest making sure that your iPhone or the device you're using is updated to the latest software version. This helps provide software improvements on your device and can help with the sound quality of your AirPods Pro. If you're using an iPhone, here's how to update the iOS software: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch In addition, for an iPhone, I suggest checking to see if there's a possible carrier settings update available. Here's how: Update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad

Now if this does not help, the next step is to reset your AirPods by following the steps outlined in this helpful article: Reset your AirPods

Kind regards.

Same problem with 2 pairs I bought. After an hour or more with apple online there was no improvement after they eventually told me to reset them.

I brought them to an authorised dealer who sent them off for testing. Got them back a week later with engineers report saying there was no problem with them. (The technician in the shop told me they get between 20-40 complaints a week for the same issue).

I tried them again after I got them back and the sound quality was still very bad. I’ve sent them back again, just waiting to see what apple say.
