midi recording double notes??

I'm recording straight midi tracks. When I go into the piano roll to edit ... I find that each note has been recorded twice (one over the top of the other). I have to go through deleting the top layer note by note before I can start editing -- otherwise every time I move a note I have it's double underneath to deal with.

Why would Logic be recording 'double'? Or what little nasty button have I inadvertently hit that might be causing this??

All ears,

Ben

This usually occurs when your keyboard controller is transmitting on two "zones" or "layers" at the same time. And typically you'll find that you're transmitting from one zone on channel 1 and a different channel from the other zone, although it's entirely possible to activate two zones set to transmit on the same MIDI channel. So at first blush I'd take a look at your keyboard and see if it has this capability. If so, turn off the offending zone.

Bang On.

Thank you iSchwartz. Very perceptive of you. I've just started using an old Yamaha 88 key controller. Been in a box for years. And of course, it's sending on two channels. And of course, it's an incredibly complicated beast, will do everything one can do in midi, except be simple. Now I will spend a day trying to figure out how to turn off the second channel ... or whatever it's doing.

Thank you mucho for that...

Hi Erik,

Yeah, you are right, the signal is coming in over two channels. This Yamaha is a monster of inscrutability. It allows me a play function of 'single' 'dual' or 'split'. And it is some weird combination of hitting two buttons (not obviously marked) at once, that will get me out of 'dual' mode. I remember this from only, like, twenty five years ago. Whoosh. Old.

And I can't remember the combination to reset it to factory mode (when it was automatically in 'single' mode). But, somewhere I have the manual. It's just that I'm trying to finish a job for an anxious client who wants desperately to pay her bill tonight.

I'll keep hitting buttons. Or go dig through the boxes for the manual. The universe will unfold accordingly.

Thank you...

Ben

Yup, like I said, with two zones active it's possible to transmit on two different channels.

The quick fix is to add a transformer in the Clicks and Ports layer of the Environment that filters out anything incoming on channel 2. The pic below shows how to connect the transformer, programmed as shown in the inset. Do this and you should be good to go until you figure out how to fix the problem at the source.

iSchwartz,

You are a whiz. I'm going to study your workaround, looks fascinating. That's the area in Logic that has always terrified me, since they day of incept.

Guess what. 30 seconds I found my old Yamaha manual. There are actually three separate manuals for that keyboard, all in four languages. Lots of paper. I found the odd little button that allows me to click off the double send. Whoosh. All fixed.

Thank you for your double help today. Very very much appreciated,

All the best,

Ben

You're welcome, and thanks to Erik for getting the info on the channels you were transmitting.

BTW, the environment isn't such a scary place, really. You actually deal with it every day, though for most audio and instrument use it's veiled in the form of the Mixer page.

For your further environmental investigations (and per what I posted), all you really need to know to get started is that the big block on the left (the "physical input") is where MIDI comes into Logic. But that MIDI doesn't go anywhere until an output from the physical input is connected to the "sequencer input" on the right. And if you interject various objects in that path (like that transformer or the MIDI monitor) you can alter (transformer) or view (monitor) MIDI on its way into Logic proper.

Cheers!

I guess it will be better to cut the "Sum" cable in such scenarios and cable the "double note device" port to the Transformer Filter -> Sequencer Input you show, while the other ports (if any) can be cabled to say a "Sum monitor" -> Sequencer Input to prevent channel filtering of the "other devices" which channels match the Transformer Filter setting.

Hi Ben
I have 2 KX 88's... one is for parts... You might try holding the A & B buttons while cycling the power. Also you might try hooking a midi cable directly (yeah,, I know its weird..) from the input to the output and cycling the power. I've really been looking for something to replace them with but I haven't found anything that feels quite the same. Good Luck

Hi gang,

Thank you most kindly for all your suggestions. I found my manual in 30 seconds (sheer fluke luck or clairvoyance that I noticed it two weeks ago while looking for something else). All I needed was to hold down button MS 1 (whatever button MS 1 does, and it does many many things apparently) and it allowed me to toggle between single and dual. Everything is working hunky dory now.

And thank you for your workaround Mr. iSchwartz ... cool ... and I remember now, spending time in the environment window, a long time ago, and somehow I must have set something right coz I've been running fine ever since: though I'm only running one keyboard in now, and all my sample engines are inboard, unlike the old days where I had a 24 track outboard with all manner of instrument being pumped through the system.

All the best gang, much appreciated,

Ben
