Deleting an extra Macintosh HD - Data volume

I just re-installed my backup data on a new MB Pro and find I have 2 Macintosh Data volumes: one is greyed out and not "mounted", and the other intact and mounted.

Can I erase this (greyed-out) volume without damaging my current volume, and will the 10GB disk space become available to my current volume?? I would rather not re-install everything!!!!!

for some clarity — In the Finder (and Desktop included) both volumes appear as a single Macintosh HD.

The ghost volume could point to an incomplete initialization of the parent drive prior to the installation.

Before you delete anything you need to verify which volume contains your files. If the mounted version has all your files, then delete the other.

In Catalina the Data volume is invisible and does not appear on the Desktop. It is visible in Disk Utility. The proper way to remove a volume is using Disk Utility. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the volume you wish to delete from the container and select the option to Remove an APFS volume.
