I have text file with 250,000 lines - and I need to append the same single character at the start of each line. I have tried to use various multiline /column edit plugins in Atom and Sublime but they just hang - I guess due to size of file. Is this something I could do with automator or would I better with a bash/zsh script?

I actually used "awk '$0="prefix"$0' file > new_file" from the same link in the end becasue the character to insert was '/' and I didn't fancy trying to break it out. BUT THANKS!!
You could just drop into Terminal and use some of the suggestions at this link for prepending a character string at the beginning of each line of your file.
I created a text file named abc.txt which contained ten lines of abc.txt. Here are a couple of examples from the above link where I output the result to the screen to ensure that it worked.
