AirPods causing tinnitus?

After using my AirPods for a while, I noticed a high pitched ringing in my ears (that doesn't go away). I didn't know what it was, so I looked it up and it turns out to be tinnitus. Now understand, I don't listen to music, or anything for that matter, loud. As a matter of fact, I carry a pair of earplugs in my pocket, just in case I encounter anything loud that would damage my hearing.

Having said all that, now I notice that when I put my AirPods in my ears and have nothing playing, they emit a high pitched tone that I would say exactly replicates the tone of my tinnitus, leaving me to believe that the AirPods actually caused my tinnitus.

I ended up using the Apple Support app and starting a chat with a rep. They arranged for me a callback from another rep at a higher level, which was done right away; and that second rep set me up with a Genius Bar appointment, which was earlier this afternoon.

They tested my AirPods Pro and said that they were both defective. I asked for the nitty-gritty technical details, and he said that they put them in a sound-isolating box with a sort of receiver inside, play a controlled ambient noise signal into the box, and measure the output response of the earphones. Both of mine failed the test, so he gave me two new replacements.

I have the case number and documentation by email, and can reopen the case if I notice any more problems.

I’m going to stop using them for a few days and see if the ringing subsides, then maybe give them another chance.

I have just experienced this, as well. Just in October, I was putting my AirPods 1st Gen in my ears and before I pressed play and while they paired automatically to the new iPhone 11 Pro, a loud sound came out of the Left side more than the right and caused hearing lose and initiated Tinnitus that has yet to end. I am now dealing with ringing so bad that I have to play white noise through speakers to allow me to go to sleep. This is not good, at all.

It’s sad to say that I have the same issue, but it started more than a year ago. I was using my 1st generation Airpods and once after using it I heard a continuous noise. It’s still here, never stopped and it’s like white noise. I went to several doctors, got a lot of ear test, otoneurological test, my blood pressure is not high so it can’t be the problem. All of my results were great, I consulted with my doctors about them. They don’t know what can cause it, it’s sad to say that I’m 17 years old and having tinnitus can be so annoying. I had to learn to live together with it otherwise I would have gone crazy. After that I never used Airpods again, I sold it.

Look JimmyCMPIT, no doctor is going to be able to pinpoint the exact cause of someone's tinnitus. I saw my general physician, I saw an ENT specialist, and there is nothing to be done but be careful on my ears and hope it clears up on its own.

All we are doing is sharing our own individual experiences using the Airpods Pro, which for me happened to EXACTLY coincide with the onset of tinnitus. I was not listening to them at loud volumes, I use ear plugs at concerts and am cautious about my hearing. I can't see any logical reason why the Airpods SHOULD cause tinnitus at low listening volume but that is my experience. It's been 1.5 months since I used the Airpods and the ringing still persists.

I'm happy for you that you havent had the same experience.

Me and my wife are experiencing exact same ****. When I put my first gen airpods in my ears I’ve noticed high pitching noise even when music wasn’t playing.

i used to listen to an interviews before I sleep using my airpods but then I noticed that weird noise in the morning and evening before I go to bed and it was progressing day after day. Now it’s really gives me a huge discomfort especially when iam in quite zone. I went through plenty of doctors doing all kind of tests trying to figure out what was reason. But no solution to be found yet. We don’t use airpods for couple of months now but noise hasn’t gone either. Airpods are 100% damaging your ears and Apple must do something about it

just to be clear I never had any load music using my iPod pro’s I used to listen to audio books. The constant high pitched sound started 2-4 weeks after I got them. When I suspected it might be the AirPods and si read other people experienced the same thing I stopped using them. I had the old style AirPods for years without any issues. I notified my doctor but and ordered a hearing test, but as we have shelter in place he recommended wait I schedule the appointment.
