Using a time machine backup from a USB external to a new macbook with USB-C Drive

Will it work to just buy one of those adapters that has USB plugs to go to the new computer? If it is a new macbook air for example, will it work to just plug the external hard drive into the adapter and into the computer for a successful backup? Thanks.

I have used a USB external drive connected to my 2016 MacBook Pro which has only USB-C connections by using the following adapter: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1M2AM/A/usb-c-to-usb-adapter?fnode=8b
