I just purchased a MacBook Pro and there is a promo running that with a new apple purchase you get a year free of AppleTV. The only promotion that is coming up is a 7 day free trial of AppleTV. Is there a different way to obtain the full year?

I just had the same issue. Open your web browser and go to tv.apple.com and click on sign in on the upper right hand corner. Once you sign in with your apple id and password you should see the one year free apple tv offer. Click on it to confirm, make sure the renewal date is a year from today and you're all set.
If you did the actions to redeem the offer, and you do not see the 1-year-offer when you should see it, then contact the Apple Support staff. They can help get it activated for you (e.g. with activation codes, if needed).
