Does anyone know how to remove a word (that you haven't added yourself) from the spelling dictionary? (The "Unlearn spelling" option is only available for words that you've added yourself.)

To add to what Kappy said,
The dictionary file is called LocalDictionary and is located in your user Library folder and is a regular text file.
In Finder, go to the go menu in the menu bar: Go > Go to Folder
Type ~/Library/Spelling in the Go to the folder box and click Go.
In the Spelling folder, right-click on the file LocalDictionary and come down to Open With > TextEdit
The LocalDictionary file will open in in TextEdit.
Each word will appear on a separate line. You can then delete words just like you would when editing other text files. Make sure they are kept on a separate line
When you are finished, go to the file menu and come down to Save or press command s to save the LocalDictionary file.

No problem. that is correct. You did state that you want to remove misspelled and non-existent words. Based on this mispelled words you accidentally add yourself are located in LocalDictionary file.
I'm not aware if you can delete words from the preinstalled dictionary yourself, only the words you add to the LocalDictionary.

Thanks, but that dictionary only contains words that you've added yourself. What I want to edit is the preinstalled dictionary.
As far as I know you cannot. However, if you know where the dictionary file is located you can try opening it with an editor to see if words can be removed without messing up the dictionary when in use. I would try this on a copy of the file just in case it doesn't work.
