iPhone doesn't make sound for text message notification if my computer is on with bluetooth enabled

When my macbook pro is on with bluetooth enabled my phone does not alert me when text messages come through. This seems to be the case until I turn off bluetooth on my macbook and then my phone starts alerting me again. It does not seem to matter if I have the messages app active or shutdown, as long as my computer has a bluetooth connection to my phone I go all day not knowing if someone is communicating with me. I never have the volume on my computer, so if it is silently sounding there I get nothing. Also the screen doesn't turn on for the text either which makes it even worse and I don't get on-screen notifications on the macbook.

Is there any way to disable this annoying "feature"?

One minor update, if I enable "Text message forwarding" on my iphone I at least get the message alert window on my mac when I receive a text. Downside of this is that I no longer see the alert on my lock screen which is counterproductive as well and of course still no sound on my iphone. From what I can tell this is by design, but the feature makes no sense, what if my computer is on and I am in the other room? Very frustrating.
