Every time I even try to look if there are new updates for my iPhone XR a message pops up saying it is unable to check for update, cancel or try again. I’ve been trying for about a week an a half and the same message pops up.

Try force restarting your phone and then try the update again. Quickly press and release the volume up button, then volume down button, then hold the side button until you see the Apple logo on the screen. When you see the logo, you can let go of the side button.
If that doesn’t work, try another WiFi network or try using iTunes to update your phone.
