Bought the APP recently and used them about 7-8 hours in total. Here is my current status.

Status Today:

  • Ears itchy and moist with swelling.
  • left Ear Canal Skin broken.
  • can hear Blood pumping in my left Ear.
  • Hearing generally muffled.
  • Tissue is worst where the Tips touched it.

General Facts:

  • used Sennheiser and Bose with Silicone for years, NO problems.
  • regular Apple Pods, NO problems.
  • IT Consultant and Diver with constant plastic/rubber/silicone/electronic device contact. NO problems in 20 years.
  • NO Allergies.

First Assumptions:

  • on closer inspection noticed strong chemical Stench coming from the Tips.
  • assuming chemical contamination.
  • primarily a material issue not a medical one as Silicone Allergies are extremely rare.

Seeking Confirmation:

  • called friend (Material Scientist).
  • due to smell she assumed Evaporation of (maybe) toxic compound.
  • speculated maybe Solvent or Plasticizer.
  • instructed me on doing a Smell Test for Evaporation.

Smell Test:

  • prepared four Ziploc Bags. (unused and aired-out, neutral smell).
  • detach Tips from the Pods and put each part in its own Ziploc Bag. Bags not too big and not too small.
  • let parts rest for two hours (longer is better) so whatever evaporates can accumulate in the Bags.
  • (prepared an extra fifth bag for the unused Small and Large Tips).
  • after two hours gently opened Bags one after the other and immediately but carefully Smell-Tested the Air inside. best to be in a well aired room and take generous breaks between the Tests so the nose can "recalibrate".
  • extra Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser Tips.

Results:

  • Bag with the unused Small/Large Tips contained a shocking amount of chemical Stench!
  • very similar to Industrial Grade Solvent or and Acidic Cleaning Solution. Smell subsided quickly but still noticeable when in close proximity to nostrils.
  • Medium Tips no better, after three days of usage noticeable chemical Stench.
  • Pods themselves only very mild (but similar) chemical Stench which vanished very quickly.
  • immediately stopped using the Tips and now keep them in a Ziploc Bag.
  • Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser FREE OF STENCH.

Conclusions:

  • there is some kind of highly toxic chemical compound evaporating from the APP Silicone Tips.
  • Tips are contaminating the Pods inside their charging case. Would explain why more sensitive users react to the whole Pod Assembly with reactions outside of the ear canal.
  • Primary Health Issues after using the APP are most likely NOT an Allergy/Infection but something similar to A CHEMICAL BURN! Ears are desperately trying to drain out out the toxic compound. Poisoned skin is drying out and dying. Infections are probably second in the chain since the skin is damaged and ready for bacterial invasion.
  • would explain the long healing process and why Antibiotics barely help.
  • GENTLY&REGULARLY CLEAN THE AFFECTED AREA WITH A Q-TIP SOAKED IN A SALINE SOLUTION TO WASH OUT THE TOXIC MOLECULES AS BEST AS POSSIBLE.
  • selling Millions of Pods with few complaints matters nothing since the reaction might only show in people sensitive to this specific compound.
  • if you lack sensitivity the compound used will STILL accumulate and might cause massive health problems long term.
  • DO NOT USE SMELLING SILICONE TIPS!
  • (checked long term APP owners. pre 2020 production batch seem to be mostly free of these issues as well as the Stench.)

What`s next:

  • Stored all the Tips airtight and leave the Pods themselves outside so they can air-out. Will do more Ziploc Smell Tests on the Pods to check on contamination.
  • IF Pods have no more noticeable chemical stench I will try third party Tips and run another Test. Results in the thread were mixed maybe due to Pod contamination.
  • Will clean affected areas with generous amounts of Saline Solution as mentioned. Two washes today already brought down Itching/Swelling considerably.
  • Will Chat with Apple Europe on Monday escalating the Issue.
  • Will contact local Labs and Universities for a proper chemical/material analysis. Essential to find out what is used in these Tips to cause such violent reactions.

I will update the post as it develops.

I have also posted earlier and after reading these posts, I have decided to immediately stop using the APP and ordered an alternative to the the APP tips. There are a few but decided on Canopus

Although they were delivered the next day, I have not used them yet as I am waiting until I don't have the symptoms as I don't want to be confused with previous symptoms. Unfortunately, 72 hours later, I still have the itchiness, although no leaking in ears. I am however still using the old wired Apple EarPods. Not worse, not improving. Reading that some have symptoms since March makes me wonder how long this will take for me to completely recover. I used cotton swabs to apply Polysporin and a special oil with diluted tea tree oil. Although it has improved a bit, I don't think it is related to the treatment but more ceasing to use the APP. If it had been an infection, it would have been much better by now. This tells me that it is not an infection caused by the APP but an allergy which creates inflammation which itself triggers a defence mechanism by the body to produce the ear discharge. The way to recovery for me now is to avoid further contact with the APP, reduce as much as possible the use of any ear pods and get something the pharmacist might recommend to reduce the inflammation and is suitable for the ears.

Like everyone else here, I had the same problem. I am an avid Apple user and annoys me the fact Apple always handle issues like this as no events. Apple is aware but denies it until the problem is secretly resolved and it seems as it's never happened.

It happened to me with MacBooks, Timemachines, Iphones problems.

I'm also a physician and it seems to me that the problem is related to the whole surface of APP, because the eczema appears in the ear canal, the outside part where the body touches and even in the skin where the outside "handle" tip touches.

I will try not only change ear tips but use body and "handle"covers. Maybe it's also worth cover the inner case too.

I'm curious if that worked for you Laguq_Ada.

There are a lot of folks who said they could return them even after the return date. I bought mine through amazon back in April. They have been very liberal about this but I kept them after new tips and a cover on the body of them made them usable. In spite of that I still think about possibly returning them when I hear how bad your reaction is. I had drainage and itching and saw my doctor in a telemedicine visit. I treated it with debrox to clear the wax and steroid drops for the inflammation. I’ve been doing fine now but have read from some folks in this discussion that they became more sensitive to other ear buds too after this. Everyone has a different range of experiences. There are some that wrote who their Apple rep was and they got a refund plus even reimbursement for their related expenses. Unless one of them writes now you might have to scroll through a lot of comments. I would let apple know that others could return it after the return date.

After jumping though the appropriate hoops. Apple is gonna buy them back. FYI just to be sure I wore some Beats that have ear inserts like AirPods Pro but not silicon. No problems at all, is def. the ipods! As an experiment cleaned my ears (hydrogen peroxide on cotton swab) and the pods (with hydrogen preroxide and alcohol) and put them on for a timed 5 minutes. Two hours later, drainages that last almost 48 hours with the following crust. Wore the beats for an hour, no problem at all! All for now!

It took about 3 months of daily wearing for 1 hour for my ears to become allergic to the APP's. In the last month my ears would be super itchy then finally my right ear drum started feeling like there was pressure in it which caused sound to be muffled. A small amount of fluid would also come out after using APP's. Ive been using in ear headphones for 20 years and have never had a single issue. I went to an ENT and thankfully my ear wasnt infected but he did say there was a lot of swelling in the canal. He wanted to send me to get an MRI but I cant do that so I declined. I immediately stopped using the APP's and its been about a week and a half and my right ear feels/sounds 95% normal again. I really like the APPs and dont want to give up on them but there's no way Im putting them in my ears with the stock ear tips. Has anyone tried the AZLA XELASTEC tips on amazon?

Oh wow I can't believe how many people are having this problem. I definitely had no idea what it was. I didn't even use them that much, only few minutes a day. But after about 6 months, my ears started itching like crazy and leaking clear fluid at nights out of nowhere. My ears were so f-ed that even slight touch would cause them to leak. The doctor said its chronic eczema in both ears and on ear lobes as well. No infection apparently. I just got some cream for it and that helped a little. Now its been more than a month and my ears are slowly getting better but I'm scared to put anything in them anymore lol. I sold the pros of course. I purchased Beats Solo Pro and they're actually better so I'm happy with that. it's just weird because I've never ever had any problems like that.

I tried the replacement memory foam ones, no change at all. Apple refunded my money back even after 6 months, but I did buy mine straight from an Apple store. My reaction started approximately 3 -6 months and not straight away.

I returned them in March/April time, carried on using my Bose over ear headphones with no problems at all.

I have recently in the last two weeks brought the 2nd generation AirPods with wireless charger and using them with no problems as I did with my 1st generation ones which I lost hence I upgraded to AirPods Pro's but have now gone back to normal AirPods but 2nd generation.

If you're having problems with the AirPods Pro then changing the ear pieces may not as so many have reported, thread has been going for a long time.

Just get apple to refund you, they paid all the postage costs for the product to be sent away for testing, It's my belief they have not got to the bottom of it yet.

I feel better knowing now that this is a problem with the AirPods Pro. I got them on release and immediately loved them until my ears were so infected I couldn't stand to touch them. My doctor was really amazed. He said you really got this from earbuds? I mean oozy smelly crusty painful red ears. I'm sorry you're in pain. Ciprodex is an expensive ear drop that really worked for me. It was cheaper to get directly through a patient first than to get a prescription and take it to the CVX.

The above said, I also wondered if the inside of the case was contaminated. I cleaned my AirPods with rubbing alcohol to try to get any possible residue off. I need to do the same with the case. I found Neosporin on my outer ear Only helped it heal (never inside). That and absolutely don’t rub it. I’ve been through this 3 times now. I also found rinsing with hydrogen peroxide helped put a stop to the itching but saline might have done the same.

I didn't realize the cause right away, but as soon as I got my new AirPod Pros & started using them, I got what appeared to be double swimmer's ear infections that same week. I am not someone who was even prone to ear infections as a child - I think I've had 1-2 in my life. So suffice it to say this was the worst I've ever had -- severe expression of every possible symptom from itching to redness to drainage to compromising my hearing...& sleep, since the drainage would leak out of my ears at night onto my pillow, it was horrible. During the day it would leak down the side of my face while I was just sitting there talking -- super attractive. The doctor gave me ear drops but even so, it took over a week to fully resolve. It was painful & messy. Fast forward nearly 6 months later, I have not used them since but was brave enough to try using them again yesterday for less than 1 hour & immediately had a reaction as soon as I removed them from my ears. They are red, itchy & swollen. So I can only assume I too am allergic to the silicone tips -- which I also didn't realize was a possibility, since I don't have any other known allergies to silicone. Thank you to the previous users for sharing that here; does anyone know if you can replace the silicon tips with tips made from other material? I have Bose earbuds with rubbery tips that have never caused me any problems in the 15 years I've been using that brand/model.
