Bought the APP recently and used them about 7-8 hours in total. Here is my current status.

Status Today:

  • Ears itchy and moist with swelling.
  • left Ear Canal Skin broken.
  • can hear Blood pumping in my left Ear.
  • Hearing generally muffled.
  • Tissue is worst where the Tips touched it.

General Facts:

  • used Sennheiser and Bose with Silicone for years, NO problems.
  • regular Apple Pods, NO problems.
  • IT Consultant and Diver with constant plastic/rubber/silicone/electronic device contact. NO problems in 20 years.
  • NO Allergies.

First Assumptions:

  • on closer inspection noticed strong chemical Stench coming from the Tips.
  • assuming chemical contamination.
  • primarily a material issue not a medical one as Silicone Allergies are extremely rare.

Seeking Confirmation:

  • called friend (Material Scientist).
  • due to smell she assumed Evaporation of (maybe) toxic compound.
  • speculated maybe Solvent or Plasticizer.
  • instructed me on doing a Smell Test for Evaporation.

Smell Test:

  • prepared four Ziploc Bags. (unused and aired-out, neutral smell).
  • detach Tips from the Pods and put each part in its own Ziploc Bag. Bags not too big and not too small.
  • let parts rest for two hours (longer is better) so whatever evaporates can accumulate in the Bags.
  • (prepared an extra fifth bag for the unused Small and Large Tips).
  • after two hours gently opened Bags one after the other and immediately but carefully Smell-Tested the Air inside. best to be in a well aired room and take generous breaks between the Tests so the nose can "recalibrate".
  • extra Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser Tips.

Results:

  • Bag with the unused Small/Large Tips contained a shocking amount of chemical Stench!
  • very similar to Industrial Grade Solvent or and Acidic Cleaning Solution. Smell subsided quickly but still noticeable when in close proximity to nostrils.
  • Medium Tips no better, after three days of usage noticeable chemical Stench.
  • Pods themselves only very mild (but similar) chemical Stench which vanished very quickly.
  • immediately stopped using the Tips and now keep them in a Ziploc Bag.
  • Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser FREE OF STENCH.

Conclusions:

  • there is some kind of highly toxic chemical compound evaporating from the APP Silicone Tips.
  • Tips are contaminating the Pods inside their charging case. Would explain why more sensitive users react to the whole Pod Assembly with reactions outside of the ear canal.
  • Primary Health Issues after using the APP are most likely NOT an Allergy/Infection but something similar to A CHEMICAL BURN! Ears are desperately trying to drain out out the toxic compound. Poisoned skin is drying out and dying. Infections are probably second in the chain since the skin is damaged and ready for bacterial invasion.
  • would explain the long healing process and why Antibiotics barely help.
  • GENTLY&REGULARLY CLEAN THE AFFECTED AREA WITH A Q-TIP SOAKED IN A SALINE SOLUTION TO WASH OUT THE TOXIC MOLECULES AS BEST AS POSSIBLE.
  • selling Millions of Pods with few complaints matters nothing since the reaction might only show in people sensitive to this specific compound.
  • if you lack sensitivity the compound used will STILL accumulate and might cause massive health problems long term.
  • DO NOT USE SMELLING SILICONE TIPS!
  • (checked long term APP owners. pre 2020 production batch seem to be mostly free of these issues as well as the Stench.)

What`s next:

  • Stored all the Tips airtight and leave the Pods themselves outside so they can air-out. Will do more Ziploc Smell Tests on the Pods to check on contamination.
  • IF Pods have no more noticeable chemical stench I will try third party Tips and run another Test. Results in the thread were mixed maybe due to Pod contamination.
  • Will clean affected areas with generous amounts of Saline Solution as mentioned. Two washes today already brought down Itching/Swelling considerably.
  • Will Chat with Apple Europe on Monday escalating the Issue.
  • Will contact local Labs and Universities for a proper chemical/material analysis. Essential to find out what is used in these Tips to cause such violent reactions.

I will update the post as it develops.

I haven’t tried them personally.

I think what you’ll find in this thread are a lot of people having different types of reactions for different reasons. Some people seem to be allergic to the tips right out of the box and have to return the Airpod Pros or get refunds through Apple Support. A few develop a reaction over time. Some people can’t use any in-ear headphone after a reaction the Pros, some can switch back to another brand or even the older model Airpods. Some are allergic to the hard plastic, some are allergic to the silicone tips.

I developed a sudden reaction a couple weeks ago during a period of reduced usage, after months of normal use. I discontinued use and yesterday switched back to my Bose Soundsports with no reaction. I’ll stick with the Bose headphones for a little bit longer until I know I’m fully in the clear, then try the Airpod Pros again with the original tips. If I flare up immediately, I’ll try the third party Amazon silicone tips, which some have reported cause no issues.

i have been trying to get hold of apple support here in europe and get keeping put on hold, when someone finally does come on, the line cuts off. Got as far as having a someone being assigned to my case

This just happens again and again, not sure why they can not just call you back on facetime audio

anyway not sure I have time for all this,

you'd think they would invest some money in their phone system

I had to schedule a call with Apple support from the website. They called as agreed. After explaining my severe allergic reaction to the AirPods Pro, they provided shipping labels for me to return them for a full refund. Their customer service representative was very helpful. I am resolved, although disappointed they were not an option for me.

Good luck everyone!

I’ve have just recently sent mine to Ireland for testing and review!

Apple paid all the shipping charges, it was easy and the agent looking after my case is in contact constantly to let me know every update.

I did try other tips which had the same affect but on small scale. The reaction wasn’t as bad.

currently Apple are still looking into this problem, so unless people report to Apple, then it will take longer for them to figure out what to do.

Strongly Urge you to report this to Apple Via contact support.

I reported mine under usage. It was really quick, I had to give them loads of information and pictures.

Now I am just waiting, some people are being refunds straight away.

Please open a case with them. Every-time I had reaction it got worse!

Yes, this same reaction has happened to me the past few times I have used the air pod pros. I am now not using them and am on an antibiotic. I received them as a Christmas present and would only use them on the train ride home which was less than a thirty minute commute. I do not have this reaction when I use the regular air pods.

I got same problems as you guy do using the AirPods Pro. First, after long usage listening to a music or watching videos, feel like I’m having headaches later on ears getting itchy inside. Eventually having fluid discharge and getting crusty when dried. My doctor said I’m getting allergies on the AirPods Pro I’m using. He taught it’s probably allergic to the silicon tip. I used a lot of earbuds and still have my Bose wireless earbuds but doesn’t have allergic reactions. The reason I bought the AirPods Pro because I have iPhone that’s is perfect for it. So I experimented, I bought aftermarket replacement memory tip at eBay. Tried them out and hoping it will solve the problem. Used it like an hour. Next day, i have the same reaction. My ears itching and starting to have slightly fluid discharge. So my conclusion, is not the silicone tip the problem. It’s the unit itself. This something that apple company needs to figure it out what causing a lot of users having allergic reaction with this new product. I already reported it to them and took information of my issues before I bought the replacement aftermarket memory tips.

I also had an allergic reaction after wearing my new Airpods Pro. Symptoms: Drainage, itching, redness, muffled sounds, etc. Not fun. I went to the doctor and got on antibiotics to clear the infection. I didn't connect the infection to the new pods immediately, but quickly came to realize it was indeed the cause after trying to use my Airpods again once the infection cleared only to have it flare up again almost immediately!

I posted my experience many pages ago but now with a wider audience, has anyone else had a similar reaction to the Beats Powerbeats Pro that came out last year? I actually bought them several months before AirPods pro and not only developed the in ear drainage, I developed an oozing rash on the backside of one ear where the Powerbeats Earhooks go. Went to doctor 2x not knowing headphones would have caused this since I never had any issues with the old similar Powerbeats.

After several months of just going back to my regular AirPods with no issues, I bought AirPods Pro and the in ear issue started all over again. I have tried several different 3rd party replacement tips, and after fully letting my ear heal, I can now wear them using some super cheap knockoff silicone tips I found here in HK.

Happy for those that were able to return or send to Apple for "testing". I was told even after sending Apple my doctor bills and opening a case, that they could not do anything for me.

Yes. Before the AirPods Pro, I had no allergic reaction to the Powerbeats Pro. The AirPods Pro caused such serious allergic reactions that I had to go to the Doctor and receive treatment for redness, itching, oozing and crusting in the ear. I switched over to a pair of Bang and Olufsen ear pods, and no such problem. Then, one day I went to the gym and decided to use my Powerbeats Pro and I had the same reaction you did. Not only in my ear, but BEHIND my ear where the support wraps around the ear. What's strange is that before I bought the Airpods Pro, I had never had a reaction to the PowerBeats, even though I was wearing them for at least a few times a week for several hours for a few months before buying the Airpods Pro.

I ordered replacement tips 3 months ago from AliExpress. They finally arrived yesterday, but even though the tips were advertised as specifically for the Airpods Pro, they don't fit. Back to the drawing board.

Well, I guess it's comforting to know why I've been dealing with antibiotics and doctors for a couple of weeks now.

I'm in the same boat as all of you, it seems. Got mine as a Christmas present, and for the last month or so my ears have been draining (at night, especially), crusting up, itching - you name it.

My doctor couldn't find anything obviously wrong. I've spent money on audiologist tests, ENT visits, antibiotics, etc - nothing cleared it up.

I finally stopped using the AirPod Pros because my ears were so swollen and full of crust that they wouldn't fit. Inside of 2-3 days, all the drainage stopped. By the time a week had gone by, everything had cleared up.

I decided to try the AirPod Pros out again. That next morning I woke up to my ears draining and full of fluid.

Good times.

Enjoy the money, Apple - you've earned it.

Hello all, it is interesting to find this post. I have never had a reaction to earbuds. I don't even recall having an ear infection since I was a child! I was actually doing a search for allergic reaction to PowerBeats Pro when I found this post. I have had the same experience as everyone else here! I imagine the tips have to be made from the same material! I really liked the way they sound, but ultimately gave them to my wife... I thought about purchasing the Airpod Pros, but I won't be doing that after seeing this post. I'm not willing to take a chance on having the same problem....
