I purchased the AirPod pros and also had an allergic reaction to the silicone tips. I definitely would recommend that if anyone experiences itching they stop using this as it may be that there is an allergy to the tips. Follow up with a dr if unsure to avoid an ear infection.
The thing I find confusing is why having the silicone tips on made the reaction 100 times worse and more widespread over the surface area of the ear affected. Adding a silicone cover over the body of the AirPods Pro made the reaction worse yet causing it to spread to my outer ear. After I returned the AirPods Pro I went and bought the original AirPods. I barely had a reaction to those without the silicone but still had a reaction of mild itching. I decided not to test my limits so returned those. Also odd, I can wear a silicone insert under my face mask to hold it away from my face for exercise making it easier to breath. I’ve worn it for up to 3 hours and don’t have any reaction to that type of silicone touching my face.
Has anybody here switched to sony wf-1000xm3 because of this issue? I am considering to but scared if the issue still occur.
I tipped off a Norwegian online IT news site, and they published some references to this discussion.
The comments however were (as usual) not very useful (lots of bs....)
It has puzzled me that there's literally nothing about this issue in the media, hence I thought for a long time I was the only one experiencing this (until I found this discussion thread).

I just made a post that might helps us take action and spread the word, but it was deleted by Apple.
Given my lack of joy with Apple, after the retailer said I had no consumer rights because Apple had said it was a user and not a product issue, I also shared concerns with the bbc and a couple of uk tech mags, just wanting someone to help me get some answers and justice. I think they may be nervous of going up against a Goliath - even if a lot of little Daniels need protecting!
Oops, that was David and Goliath - so a lot of little David’s need protecting. Daniel found himself in the lions den - maybe not so far off what I meant to say!
I did and have had none of the issues that I had with the AirPod Pros. Unfortunately my pair had some audio issues (sound kept cutting in and out), so I had to send them back to Sony last week for replacement. I should have my new pair in about a week.
In my opinion, part of the reason this issue isn’t getting any coverage is that i can’t find any serious, ongoing discussions about it outside of this thread. And, this thread itself isn’t doing the issue any justice by the title and the “solved” selection up front. I’m sure someone glancing at this would read the title and think that some fool with a silicon allergy used the APP anyway and had a problem. Of course they did, they have an allergy!
As we all now know, that simply isn’t the case. Through much troubleshooting by many of us in this thread, trying many different tips, covers, skins, etc., to no avail, the issue is not with the tips. Nor is it with any kind of pre-existing silicon allergy. Personally, I’ve used in-hear headphones for many, many years, in many different configurations - with tips, without tips, custom molded, plastic, wired, non-wired, etc. - with no issues. I have no known allergies. I have no pre-existing condition such as eczema that would be aggravated by using the APP. There is no prior history of anything indicating I would have any kind of issue with them as a form factor. Further, I’ve used Apple products - including many generations of wired earbuds - for decades with no issue or reaction to any products or materials used prior by Apple.
Some in this thread have speculated the issue may be related to the battery. Personally, I believe there is something in the compound of either the body of the APP and/or the charging case causing this issue. I’ve tried doing what someone else in this thread said - leaving the APPs out of the case and the case open for a few days to help “air them out”. I left mine out and open for a week and a half. Put the APP back in to charge real quick so I could see if it made a difference - it did not. Within a minute I could tell the issue was returning. Further, and more telling to me, the case still smelled like chemicals. I’ve never had a plastic product where this didn’t dissipate very quickly. I’ve had the APP since December and it still smells like chemicals? Extremely odd in my mind. I believe the issue is being caused by contact with the body of the devices and is being further exacerbated by the original tips, which are designed to provide a “seal” to the inner ear, preventing any kind of circulation, causing the issue to go deeper into the ear canal. Again, this is just my “belief”, as Apple has not disclosed what’s in the compound and/or polymers used in these devices, and I don’t know anyone at any kind of chemical lab capable of taking samples and separating them into their components.
Calling what’s happening an “allergy” is really minimizing. According to my ENT, prolonged and continued use of the product causing the issue could lead to permanent damage of the inner ear, including the ear drum. An “allergy”, even if calling it that turns out to be technically true, just sounds like some minor annoyance that can be solved by taking Benedryl.
Over the last two weeks, I’ve been in contact with Apple, as I mentioned earlier in this thread. I’ve gone through the repeated barrage of questioning, I’ve submitted many pictures that “the engineering team” requested via my “safety advisor”. I am now waiting to find out what they want to do about it.
It is wildly disappointing that Apple hasn’t owned this and put out a service bulletin or at the very least a statement. This thread alone is nearly 100 pages with thousands of people having the same issue. I’ve sent links to this thread to various Apple-based news sites with no response. No idea if anyone is even considering writing something up on this. But if APP 2 are indeed coming out soon, the point may be moot. Not likely to get clicks for an “old” product article. It’s further frustrating because, as I’ve said and others have said in this thread, I WANT to be able to use them. The sound is fantastic, the functionality in an Apple ecosystem is fantastic. But I cannot without a great deal of suffering, weeks of medication, barely functioning at work, and many, many sleepless nights.
Maybe Apple will “quietly address” the issue by correcting it for APP2. Only time will tell. But it would be very nice if they would simply say so.
I don’t know if they’re gonna fix it in the next version man. They’ve had this issue on the AirPods Pro ever since they came out and now people are having the same issue with the AirPods max. Apparently they didn’t address it at all
I did! I talked about it in an earlier post. I switched to the Sony earbuds and wished I had sooner because not only did I not have any ear issues with them, they sound way way better than AirPods. Should have gotten them sooner anyway
so I ended up going all in and got Sony earbuds and their popular over ear headphones
Yes you are allergic to the silicon and whatever proprietary materials they are using in the AirPod pro tips. They act so surprised when you tell technical agents like you are the first person contacting them about this. Other than purchasing hypoallergenic tips from 3rd party vendors they really don’t care.
Until they know what causes these issues and that they can fix it, Apple won't want to make this public because it will 100% hurt their sale especially when there are new APP and AP coming up. Just imaging the title "Apple admit that the APP is causing serious ear issues and they don't know the cause", it would be a disaster. Even for those who hasn't developed these issues would think twice about using/buying these.
News sites and network won't investigate into this because they are scare of Apple. Unless they have good proofs and enough of them, they won't make any move.
I had all the issues before but then after I clean the APP and the inner case to get rid of the weird smell that comes with it and set volume to half, I am able to use it normally now. (about 1hour/day with no problem)
By the way, who put the "solved" selection?
Me too on the ear canal symptoms from Air Pods Pro. I’ve been a Air Pods user since day one without symptoms, so we know the plastic used on the Air Pods works without a reaction.
While experimenting with ear tips for the Air Pods Pro, I bought and used the foam tips recommended in forums and for about two days it looked promising but then the symptoms showed up again. So I stopped using the Air Pods Pro.
So, I have gone back to using the AirPods and am symptom free again. It takes a couple weeks for the ear canal to heal.
I am curious whether there are tips available made of plastic (same hard plastic used for AirPods) for the Air Pods Pro?
You can change the tips a million times it won’t help. ITS NOT THE TIPS!! It’s something they are using inside the pods that is causing the reaction!!
