I need help with changing my Apple ID from a third-party email provider to an iCloud email address

Good evening,

I need help with the following topic, changing my AppleID from a third-party email provider to an iCloud email address. I've jumped through some hoops already and I was able to successfully create a new iCloud email address and then unbind it from the appleid in hopes that I could then add it under my reachable at section on my appleid.apple.com account page. Unfortunately it's not working and I am unable to add it. Furthermore when I try to login to the iCloud email address that I created it now gives me a verification error stating it is not associated with an appleID.

Has anyone successfully changed a gmail email AppleID to an iCloud?

Thank you,

I was able to figure it out

When you create an Apple ID with a third party email address it will automatically bypass the iCloud email creation page. If you wish to get an iCloud email after you have already setup your AppleID with a third party email follow the instructions below

Open settings on your iPhone

Click your account at the top of the settings page

Click iCloud

See the Mail tab, the slider will be turned off. Turn the slider on and from here you will be prompted to create an iCloud email address that is associated with your iCloud.

After that I was able to remove google from my account. Thanks for the info Eric but I no longer wish to use gmail for anything except for my spam box.

Apple hasn’t published any guidance for using an address again. Normally, if your e-mail address was associated with an ID in any way, for example as a Reachable at or Rescue e-mail address, then it can't be reused with another Apple ID for approximately one year. I have also seen posts that stated Apple told them there was a 30 day waiting period before the address could be used again. There have also been posts that if you delete an ID associated with the address, you can never reuse the address. You will need to get another e-mail address to use as your Apple ID or you can try waiting 30 days to see if that works.

Based on what I have read, I suggest you leave your Apple ID email address as a 3rd party email address because you have more flexibility if you need to change the email address because the Apple ID got compromised. I also have read of many people who were locked out of their accounts when they forgot their password. Since the recovery email address is the @iCloud email address, if you forget your password, you also can't access your email to get emails from Apple to recover your account. You can set a rescue email address, but for some people, this hasn't worked.
