Every time I try to make a phone call, or receive a phone call, the phone rings (I sometimes get connected) and if it gets connected i can’t hear the other caller and they can’t hear me.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with audio while on a phone call. I'd be happy to share information that may help.
First, open the Voice Memos app. Try there to record and play back a recording.
If you're able to play back a voice memo as expected, try the steps here: If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound isn't clear on your iPhone.
If you're not able to record a voice memo, Contact Apple Support.
