My MAC doesn't recognise my SD card reader, what can I do?

My SD card reader has stopped working. It shows up as hardware in my system report but when I put any SD card in, it won't find it or read it. It worked last time I used it but that was a couple of months or so ago. I have rebooted the machine a few times and this does not work. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.12

Try a different USB cable, a different and direct USB port, a different SD card, and a different card reader.

If this is the integrated SD card reader, look into and see if there’s any fuzz in the port. (Don’t stick any tools in there.)

If it’s the integrated reader, try a reboot, try Safe Mode, try resetting the SMC and NVRAM, and then try a hardware service call.

If the Mac is off warranty and the internal reader has failed, using an external reader will probably be cheaper than a repair.
