Locked iPhone XS Max

I have an iPhone XS Max. Is it possible to have this phone unlocked to make it possible to transfer to a different carrier, without creating complications with updates in the future?

Only the carrier it's locked to can unlock it.

Contact them and ask.

And the iPhone being unlocked has no bearing on updates.
