Places are empty

After I upgraded macOS to Catalina, I found my Photos-> places are empty. But I can see the location info in each photo, just the <places> do not show anything.

How I can resolve this?

Hi Zongpei,

Thanks for posting your question. As I understand it, you're seeing location data for your photos, but they don't appear as expected in the Places tab on your Mac, correct?

Are you seeing any similar behavior in other tabs in Photos, like People or Memories?

Does it help if you quit the Photos app and click Apple menu () > Restart and test again?

If not, I suggest trying this next. Using this tool can help clear up unexpected issues with the Photos app: How to use the Photos library repair tool

Kind regards.

It is bug in Catalina. Several users reported this problem.

Have you by any chance imported the photos to your Photos Library as referenced?

Currently Photos 5.0 seems only be able to show managed photos on the Places map - if we import a photo as managed or consolidate a referenced photo and then restart the mac. I cannot get any photo to show on the Places Map, if import the photos with the preference "General > Copy items into the library" disabled.

Thanks léonie, you are correct. I tired to create a new library and copied items into the library then the Places map works well.

But I still like to disable "General > Copy items into the library" and use my own folder because it organized in my way. Also copy to library would double the disk these photos taken, and it's huge.

This is a sad bug...

Thanks for the info anyway.
