Randomly my mail started asking for my gmail password and I've checked it is correct. I don't have 2 step authentication on in google. I've reentered it again in preferences. I have another mail account attached and it is fine. What else can I try. Any help would be great I feel I've tried everything.

Yes, I did and it is correct. I've tried almost everything I've read to do except for deleting account and adding it back.
I was still receiving emails but 2 old emails keep popping up saying "mail needs gmail password" I put in the password and it says it is wrong.
Now I'm not receiving new emails. I'm testing from my other accounts.
Did you check to see if you have an old Gmail password entry in your Mac's Keychain?
