I like opening up safari or opening a new tab and have my favorites as icon squares show up, but my cat walked on my laptop and now they're gone. I can still access my favorites if I show the bar or sidebar but I don't like how that looks. I tried going to bookmarks>show favorites but there won't be a check when I click on it. I managed to add my frequently visited sites as icons but no luck adding my favorites.

Hey Jessica!

I see from your post that you like to have your favorites shown when a new Safari window or tab is opened, but since your kitty walked across the keyboard that does not happen any longer. I'm happy to help!

To enable favorites in a new tab or window, open the Safari app, then select Safari > Preferences > General from the Apple  menu. On the General tab, there are two drop down boxes: "New windows open with" and "New tabs open with". Make sure both drop down boxes have "Favorites" selected: Change General preferences in Safari on Mac - Apple Support.

Have a lovely day!

Thanks for following up, Jessica,

Since adjusting the Safari preferences did not solve the issue, I would next recommend quitting the Safari app: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support, restarting your Mac: How to turn your Mac on or off - Apple Support, and testing again.

If you're still unable to view your Favorites after that, see if they appear in safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Otherwise, please get in touch with Apple Support directly for additional assistance: Contact Apple Support.

Cheers.
