Unlike Windows, the Mac OS doesn't suffer from 'bit rot' so deleting 'unnecessary and temporary' files doesn't normally speed up a computer. In fact, temporary files are handled by the operating system itself and your manual deleting can actually slow the computer down. Under normal circumstances, the only time deleting files winds up improving your computer's speed is when your computer's drive is overly full. It is recommended that you have about 10-15GB of free space at all times - this space will be used for system and application caches - temporary files.

If your computer doesn't have this free space you have two choices: 1) delete unused applications (usually doesn't create lots of free space) or 2) move files from your user directory to an external drive and then delete them from the internal drive. I recommend media files (video and audio files) because they are large.

Your issue many not be drive related. There's a program called EtreCheck which can help us identify possible problems. Download it, read the instructions, and post your results.
