Fans running high. Opendirectoryd using significant CPU.

Hello,

Since the last 7-8 days, my Activity Monitor is showing high cpu usage of 'Opendirectoryd' which fluctuates from 20% to 70%. Now, I opened 'Console' and the attached is the Errors & Faults, which I observed in the first 1 minute of opening it. Please note that the log includes 'no activity' and opening 'Facebook' in a tab in Safari.

Basically, whenever there is an activity on my laptop, these activities accumulate. Further, upon reading various articles, I have already done the following:

1) Removing AdBlock extension from Safari and completely uninstalling it.

2) Dropbox is also completely uninstalled.

3) Following this process:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services ▹ Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder named "SystemConfiguration" should open. Move the contents of that folder to the Trash, except the file with this name:

com.apple.Boot.plist

Still, this is the situation.

Apps running:

Safari

Mail

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Excel

Stickies

My MacBook Pro details:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)

Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 6 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

macOS Sierra 10.12.6

Also, I don't know if it can be connected - but my speakers (since the same time) have been blasting after I turn the volume above 80%

Help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Rohan

Hello Rohan

1st...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

2nd...

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

If no change...

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

There is also Malwarebytes which may take care of it...

Thanks for the prompt reply. Sorry, was occupied with stuff.

But anyway, over the last few days, I have done:

1) Safe mode start then normal boot

2) 3 PRAM resets

3) Malwarebytes check

4) Etrecheck - Report in this link - http://pastebin.com/TxHbimFK

Also, I had changed from http to https long time back in Safari. You think it can affect this?

I have not done SMC reset as yet. Request you to check the Etrecheck report and suggest further.

Thanks!

AGMService is some Adobe thing... "adobe creative genuine service"

Uninstall Avast & CleanMyMac per their directions.

Delete this file & restart...

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

Method 1:

1 From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.

2 In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.

Method 2:

1 Go to the Finder (or desktop).

2 Hold the Option key on your keyboard, and click the Go menu at the top of the screen.

3 With the Go menu open, you'll notice that pressing and releasing Option will display or hide the Library choice in this menu.

4 Select Library from the Go menu (while holding down Option) to access the hidden folder.

Method 3:

1 Click anywhere on the desktop so Finder is the name of the foreground app shown at the upper left.

2 Press Command+Shift+H

3 With your home folder open, press Command+J. This the only place you'll see a check box to Show Library Folder. Turn it on.

Method 4: Press ⇧⌘. —the command-shift-period chord—to toggle the display of the hidden files, and the Library folder will then become visible in your home directory. And will become invisible, when you press that chord again.

From now on, your user account Library folder will be visible without having to use special keys or commands to get there.

If you plan on keeping it I'd upgrade it to 16 GB or RAM...

When I run Etrecheck, Avast was already removed. What is the way to find out if there are any Avast files left in the computer?

Also, CleanMyMac was there even before when the laptop was functioning just fine. Further, no CleanMyMac processes are appearing in Activity Monitor. Although I did remove CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist file.

Restarted.

Still no difference... :/

Thanks a lot for your help! FindAnyFile helped me immensely to find the necessary files and I trashed them all!

It seemed like Avast Autounistall/install was continuously running. I removed it completely and now the fans are not running at high speed.

Now, the only problem remaining is my speakers - they give a blasting sound when volume is kept above 70% or so... Is it blown? How to check and resolve?
