G5 2.5Quad / 17” Studio & 23” Cinema Display inverting screen colours?

Hi folks.

System: G5 2.5 Quad / Apple 17” Studio & 23” Cinema Display (plastic cases) / ADC-DVI Converters x 2.

I’m using two vintage Apple screens with my Mac G5 2.5 Quad core, connected via a pair of ADC - DVI converters.

All of a sudden one screen is showing the colours as inverted. If I employ Ctrl / Alt / Cmd / 8, then this alternates inverted mode from screen to screen!

Any ideas? I’m assuming a faulty Graphics card is the cause.

Any help and advice most welcome.

It is a known issue with the DVI to ADC converter. If the converter is not powered on in the correct order then you get the inverted colors on the ADC display (I forget what the correct order is). You may need to reboot the computer, or you can try disconnecting the ADC video cable from the converter box and reconnecting it.

A little further experimenting today and it looks like it could be the Graphics card at fault. Question now is what options are there for a new Graphics card? The current unit is a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (PCI Express)

I’ve connected a working Apple 20” Cinema display in place of the 17” Studio (and ADC-DVI converter) the screen would gain power but no screen image would come on, then connected the 17” display exactly the same scenario.

Just to confirm all was well with the 17” Studio Display, I hooked that up to my Mac Mini and at first the colours were inverted, but changed them back in System Preferences / Accessibility, then worked as it should.

Hi HWTech. Many thanks for the info on the DVI-ADC converter - much appreciated. I tried quite a few variations by rebooting, turning the power off, then re-connecting everything, and also using a different screen (20" Apple Cinema Display) - the same scenario with one inverted screen. So, I sourced a 2nd hand graphics card for a few $ on ebay and once fitted, all fine, and now back to having the two vintage screens working again!

But, in the New Year, I think I may start looking for a newer Mac Pro 5,1 and then add more modern screens.
