You can sync using wi-fi.
If you want to use Airdrop or the equivalent you will have to use a third party player. Apple's security on iOS keeps files pretty isolated from using multiple apps and definitely keeps them away form any Apple apps except for very limited cases. In other words, if you want to use the Music app you will have to get the music into that 'area' using Apple's approved method.
Thank you for replying; I ended up syncing to my iMac. I was hoping to find a method to airdrop music files from my iMac to my iPhone. It would be so convenient to be able to do that!
