I have the same POP3 email account on my iPhone and iPad. For some reason, I have a number of old sub folders on my IPad, that relate to dates for old sent emails (back to 2013) that are not showing up for the same email account on my iPhone.
can anyone tell me how I can remove them from my IPad as they are useless.

Sorry, when you are just looking at the folder list, without going into the folder itself, tap edit and you should see the option to delete the folders then. Earlier mistake on my part.
POP mail will not sync between the two devices. A folder on one device will not appear on the other device until it is just consequently created on the other one.
To delete the mail folders from the iPad, you just need to select the folder and trash it.
You should be able to slide them to the left and select Delete. An alternate is if you have Mail open and can see the folders, tap on Edit, tap on the folder, then you should get a screen to select Delete.
So, how do i select and trash?
Sliding left (or right) only opens the folder. The Edit feature once the folder is open is to edit the contents of the folder, but since there is no content, it is deactivated.
