Why does iTunes not give me the option to backup my iPhone?
I'm having exactly the same problem as the user in the linked thread, including the replied image. How can I resolve this?

When you connect a device to a new to it copy of iTunes (which can sometimes be in error) you ought to get an option to set up as a new device or restore from backup. From that screen I'd suggest clicking Continue in the hope that you'd see those two option next. Set up as a new device is somewhat misleading, selecting it doesn't change anything on the device, but it does give permission for iTunes to connect to it and back it up.
