Transposing data in Numbers

I know I can transpose a whole table but what if I want to transpose a particular subset of cells. I don't seem to be able to just highlight the cells/rows/columns and transpose them only.

Also, I am having trouble sorting columns. I have columns with dates in the first row that are not in the chronological date order. How can I quickly sort the columns so that they appear in the spreadsheet from earliest date in the leftmost column to latest date in the right most column?

Just select the range of cells you want to transpose, and drag them onto the canvas. They will automatically form a new table. Transpose that table. Then select its cells and drag them back into the original table.

You can sort rows but not columns. Normally you would want dates going down a column.

Transpose returns an array. Only one value can be shown per cell, of course, but you can read the array with the Index function like this:

Note that I am keeping the cell reference, and for a column reference I am using the column function, which returns the column number of the present cell. So this is the only reference in the formula that will change. When I fill across...

With regards to your second question, columns can be used as categories, but not sorted. Only rows can.
