what the **** is the top button?

Ok so I updated my phone and it asked me to restart the phone and the instructions on apple support say "press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume up button. Hold the top button until phone restarts" Is the top button the on/off button on right side of screen? if not what is the top button? is it the volume up? please help
