iPhone 7 Gear Icon

Received the last system update, mid November.

Gear Icon never stops. Every app is sluggish to activate, and work.

Called Apple Help one night, they suggested to do a forced Shut down. It worked for a few hours but the same issue came back.

Don't know if this is related, under Settings/Cellular Data. Each App shows the Data usage over a period of time. "Uninstalled Apps" is taking up Data, but no one can tell me what that is or how to eliminate it.

Hello, Brucol.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

From what I've read is that you're having performance issues of your iPhone and you're concerned about data usage from an uninstalled app. I'd be glad to help.

You don't have anything to worry about the uninstalled apps, the data shown is the data used while the apps were installed. Typically, this information is reset on your next billing cycle from the carrier.

On your other concern, the gear icon you're referring to is the one next to your cellular/Wi-Fi icons correct? This means that data is being used: Status icons and symbols on your iPhone

"

There’s network activity".

You'll need to identify what apps or services that are in use. One way you can do this is by turning off Wi-Fi and view your data being used via cellular data usage in settings.

For apps running slow, view this article: About iOS performance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Let me know if this helps.

Cheers!

Hello Alex,

Thank you for the response.

The gear Icon: I set up an appointment for the Genius Bar to get their input.

But, I began to shut down the WiFi and the Data in order to stop the connection to the internet. I would turn on the wifi to get any emails and things, check to see if the icon was still active, and then turn off the wifi again.

I left the wifi and the data off for the 6 hours I was asleep. Sure enough, the gear icon is now silent except for when I go onto the internet. In fact it has not been an issue since. The Genius associate ran a diagnostic which found everything to be normal.

I can't help but think that there may have been something going on though. Just a hunch, of course, the conspiracy theorist would say that the phone was being monitored by someone. I will keep a closer eye on the phone as I wonder what might have triggered this situation.

Thank you for your response.

Cheers
