How to remove red dot on System icon?

It used to be that restarting the phone would remove the notification dot from the System icon. Now there seems to be no way to get rid of it. Apple has an understandable interest in motivating people to upgrade to the latest iOS version, but removing the ability to get rid of the notification is imposing their interests on my personal property (for which I paid a considerable amount of cash).

I never immediately update to the latest release, as quite often over the years this has proven to be a costly mistake, resulting in battery drains, system slow downs and numerous other functionality issues.

A bright red dot may seem an insignificant thing, but it definitely is not when stuck on your device's user interface.

Unless some user has a method to remove the dot (other than dragging the System icon from the dock to a secondary screen), will definitely tip the balance towards this being my last Apple device.
