Terminal won't accept my password when trying to use su, but works for root

Today my computer stopped showing icons for all programs and when trying to start them it only said "damaged or incomplete". Found a helpful thread here ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8149516) but when I'm trying to do the su command it only answers "sorry" even though the password is correct. Tried enabling root (even though I'm not really sure why I'm doing...) and terminal accepted the root password I gave but not the password for the accounts. Anyone have a clue? Tried googling around but my computer skills are limited and I'm not really sure what to do.

Start with this...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Yes, I was able to make a new admin account, although not from the menu since the corrupted account won't even let me open system preferences. I did the new account by starting the computer while pressing down "command" and "s" and using some code according to some guide I found online. So the new account works fine and I found a solution on this web page about how I would be able to fix the broken account from the new one (link to the description above) but this is the part where the command in terminal struggles. So now I'm stuck with a new account that works fine but I can't get access to anything in my old account.
