Videos/Pictures are blurry on iMovie

Hi! I'm using a MacBook Pro and I'm trying to edit a video, but whenever I add any footage the quality is awful. If I pause the video, it's perfectly fine.. but when I play the video it's blurry. A friend of mine told me it would be fine once I exported, but I can't edit the video without seeing it... I don't know what to do and I've tried about everything.

I used QuickTime player to record, and when I play it through that the quality is great, so I'm assuming something is wrong with iMovie?

What versions of iMovie and operating system are you running?

The first thing I would try is to open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if the imported videos are still blurry.

Also, check the format of the videos from your iPhone. If they are HEVC that might be the problem. If they are HEVC go to your iPhone settings, Photos/Transfer to Mac or PC and select Automatic to get a more compatible export setting. Re-export the clips and see if they play clearly in iMovie.

If still no luck, use a video converter like the free download Handbrake to convert the videos to Mp4/AAC, that Handbrake will do by default. Import the converted videos into iMovie and see if they play O.K. You can get Handbrake here:
