MacOS Catalina with Maxima and Latex on MikTex

Hi other Mac people!

So has anyone managed to get Maxima (the algebra scientific math calculator) working properly on Catalina (without having to hack about in the Terminal too much)???

How about any Latex installations? I've given up on MikTex (my MikTex installation crashes as soon as Texworks loads a file) and feel like Mac-Tex is also going to be a nightmare of "Time Vampire" terminal sessions hacking about at arcane file settings and app contents... Rather than actually completing any actual work!!!!

I think those who have them installed before upgrade may have a slightly better (but still broken) time.

File permissions are a nightmare under Catalina. If an app doesn't come from the App Store, it seems it's very likely to get broken.

I've luckily got bootcamp win 10 on my mac here (where both of these apps work great), but I'd really like to spend most of my time in apple's UI.

This forces me to spend less and less time on MacOS! It's just too awkward to get stuff working.

Yes I know the "app" authors should update everything to magically "work". But these are open-source and very important "app"s for academics and scientists - the authors are obviously very busy keeping the Linux and Windows versions working - Mac users are last priority.

So the MacBook "Pro" becomes, yet again, A huge bit less "Pro" and more "consumer".

Sorry for the rant, just want to know I'm not alone here? Anyone?

I tried today with latest version 5.41.0 and older versions 5.38.0 with no success. As soon as I open the wxMaxima with 5.41.0 mac complains that the file is broken, with earlier versions I just get the "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified. Also the Gnuplot appears to be a 16 bit app in the 5.38.0 dmg download. I guess I will have to crack open the bank account for Maple or Mathematica. Or try to install on my Linux machine.

Soooo, maxima version 5.43 macOS works now for me - still need to right click and “open” the app to say tell macOS that it’s a valid app. But it works!

this is on the latest Catalina 10.15.2.

I’m very happy to be back in Mac land for my studies now. Thankyou for taking an interest. If anyone needs me to post any detailed steps, let me know. I’m not sure if it was the new Catalina update or if it’s just the latest app packages but all seems well now! Wahooo! MacTex and Maxima back on track!

thanks!
