opening a pages document

I just created a new document in Pages (version 8.1) and saved it to my desktop. I am using High Sierra as my OS. I walked away, and went back to open that document , but nothing happens when I double click on the desktop image, even though the image is not greyed out. It took me some time to create this document, and it is the first time this has happened . How do I open it? Why is this happening?

If I'm understanding you right, you're unable open one of the Pages documents you saved to your desktop. It sounds like that document is pretty important, so I can certainly see why you would reach out for help when you're no longer able to access it. I'm happy to provide you with some assistance on this.


Try out the following steps, testing to see if you're able to open that document after each one:


  1. Close Pages completely by selecting Pages > Quit Pages, or by force closing it: How to force an app to quit on your Mac.
  2. Try opening the document by selecting it from Pages > Open, rather than clicking on the desktop icon.
  3. Power your Mac off and then back on.
  4. Update Pages if there is an update available: Get updates for preinstalled apps on Mac.
  5. Update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 if you are running an earlier version: Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Update.
  6. If you have iCloud Drive enabled on your Mac, check to see if you're able to open that document online. Go to https://icloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID. If you're able to view that file in Pages there, try downloading from the website: Upload files to or download files from iCloud Drive on iCloud.com.

Hi, sorry for the delay on responding. I managed to open the document I created in Pages. I had made a copy of the document to save to the desk top. The copy seemed to open without problems. In addition, I closed all the applications and shut down the computer and restarted. The original doc seemed to open fine after that. (Must have been an APPLE gremlin😉?) Thanks!
