verification code expired from trusted device

If I try to get a verification code from my iPad to complete sign in on my iMac, I get the error " verification code expired" when I enter it. What have I missed?

iPad Pro, iOS 13

Or fill out and submit this form. The form is for iTunes, but it will get passed to the ID Support section.

How long did it take to, get the code and enter it? Have you tried getting another code?

On the iPad when I request a verification code it is instantaneous. Have tried numerous time. Immediately go to iMac and enter the code and get the error message code expired.
