Why do I have to rebuild my music library every time the OS is updated?

Nearly every time Apple update the OS I have had to rebuild my music library in iTunes and now Music. Why does the old library not transfer?

I'm not talking about syncing between devices, just the music collection that's been on the same external disc for five years and has once again disappeared from my MacBook.

When they can they do. Sometimes the thing requires a redesign. Bolting in an extra widget here, trimming off a failing gadget there, wondering why this gizmo works in precisely that way which slows playback down in that corner, finding a better and more cpu and i/o friendly way of doing it "if only we hadn't done it hat way..."

Things change. If the developers don't take advantage of good things (maybe an underlining hardware design) then we might as well have PCs
