Can't restore from Synology NAS Time Machine

Hi community.

My MBP was stolen yesterday and had to buy a new one. I'm using my Synology NAS as Time Machine via SMB protocol. But everything I tried (like 5+ hours now) didn't work. I tried recovery mode and migration assistant. Both find the SMB share, user and password are working. And then it just says "Connecting..." forever. Could that be some

I even tried copying the complete .backupbundle directory from my NAS to a prepared USB SSD (via this tutorial: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202380). My Mac didn't recognize any old backups on it though:

When I connect my Mac to the Time Machine on my NAS, it seems not to find any backups either:

Now I am kind of desperate about how to solve this issue. Any suggestions?

Maybe start a new TM backup and then copy the contents of the directory

Pelle's MacBook Pro.backupbundle

into the new folder? I'm out of ideas :-(

I'm on the latest Catalina version, the MBP is brand new.

Thanks a lot for any help with my problem.

I use a Synology NAS for TM. My thoughts are:

  • in Finder CMD+K to browse and connect via the IP address, not "diskstation' smb://lurkums@{ipaddress] - ensure your router sets fixed IP
  • NAS: Make sure your DSM is up to date
  • NAS: Control Panel>File Services> Mkes Sure SMB is checked in the first tab. Then >Advanced tab> Make sure bonjour and enable Bonjour Time Machine broadcast is ticked then>et Time Machine folders, and make sure your TMbackup FOLDERS, not the sparse/backup bundle is ticked

If any of these are not set then it may solve the problem once you tick them. Remember to Apply and Save wherever relevant

If this fails you have two routes, both worth pursuing.

  • Contact Support (Apple)
  • Use the NAS Support Centre via the GUI to open a support ticket with Synology. They are usually very good

Okay, found the problem. 2019 MBP come with Mojave, not Catalina. Wtf.

After updating, migration assistant found the backup so I tried restoring over night. When I got up, the process had stopped with an error and the error message was of no use. Now I am sitting next to it since 10 hours and it switches between 6:30h left and days:

my Wifi is very fast and reliable (Netgear Orbi) and so is the NAS. I had stable transfer speeds of about 30-40mb/s with my old MBP when backing up. Migration assistant sometimes says it‘s 3mb/s, 8mb/s or max. 14mb/s. I just don‘t get it.

I tried copying the backup folder to a USB SSD. Migration assistant recognized it as TM disk but didn‘t find any restorable backups. There‘s no manual on how to do this with the Catalina TM format (.backupbundle) :-/

Is there any way to get my work environment back up faster?

thanks for any help 😍
