Apple TV (gen3) won't accept left directional input

Apple TV (gen3) won't accept left directional input... over multiple remotes. Done a complete reset and fresh batteries in both remotes. Was trying to get it onto the wifi network so I could try the iphone Remote app, but can't even enter the wifi password since I can't move the cursor to the Left anymore. I really feel it's not a remote issue as I have the same response over multiple apple IR remotes, possibly a problem with the IR receiver on the Apple TV? That's why I was hopeful to get on a wifi network to see if the Remote App has a better response. Next Step? I might temporarily put it on Ethernet to see if that may enable me to get it on the wifi network...
