the launchpad in the dock is showing a waiting bar under it, this has just appeared in the last few days

It sounds like there's an app waiting to be installed on your Mac. Click on the Launchpad icon in the Dock. You will see your installed apps and any apps that are currently waiting or downloading. If there is an app paused, click on it to resume the download: Use Launchpad on your Mac
