Cleaning the microphone and speaker meshes

Cleaning the microphone and speaker meshes with a dry cotton swab often pushes the ear wax further down the mesh and the sound quality suffers more after each cleaning process. Is there a more efficient way of cleaning or a substance in which we should deep the cotton swabs since replacing them after one year is not environmental and cost efficient for the user friendly?
