Unable to initiate iPhone software update because it asks me to enter a 6 digit number. How can I retrieve or reset this to complete update?

The number it asks for is either your screen unlock passcode, ie. the one you use to unlock your device when you turn it on, or the restrictions passcode if one is set.

Only you can know either of these codes, and there's no way yo retrieve them. If you don't know the very codes you have set for your device, then you will need to restore the device to remove them as explained in the link provided by CT above.
