What is best way to repair permissions on Catalina ?

No idea why, but they have got screwed up, and I cannot set RWX permissions using "Get Info", Message says I do not have privileges

I am running

diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`

Seems to be taking forever !

Macbook Pro, mid 2014, 15" Retina, 480Gb SDD, 16GB RAM,

Catalina 10.15.2

Contents of disk can't be changed... Greetings. I have this issue on my Macbook Pro running Catalina 10.15.7 I realize this is a permissions issue. I am the admin - trying to install new software, getting this contents error. I have watched a couple YT videos, gone through other support threads, nothing I find is working. One YT video suggested > Terminal > crsutil disable.... no difference. Another suggested setting up a new admin user - then changing the disk permissions for other users through that new account - didn't work either. I have run disk utilities - no disk errors found, and no utility options to change permissions. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Permission Settings Hi, Since installing Catalina, I'm unable to change the permissions settings in Get Info for my main hard drive. I'm able to unlock it, but when I select Read & Write, I get a pop up that I don't have permission. There is only one account on the computer. When I open Users & Accounts in the System Prefs, I see "Allow user to administer this computer" is checked, but grayed out (maybe because only one account). I tried the terminal command recommended in another thread here on this forum, and it clearly ran the process, but upon restarting, the problem still exists. I tried to fix permissions in Disk Utility, but when I open the app, it just shows information without any options to do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thank you!

Unix permission issues with Catalina starting in ~June I am running Catalina 10.15.7 and suddenly after some upgrade in June, everything is f-d up for use in unix. For example: [a:~] Bruce% sudo ls Documents/per Documents/ unreadable [a:~] Bruce% sudo ls Documents/personal//fun/outdoors_backpack_climb/* sudo: No match. [a:~] Bruce% sudo ls Documents/personal/fun/ Password: ls: : Operation not permitted OK, is this a simple permission issue? Where are you trying to change those permissions.

Many areas of the OS cannot be modified.

The permissions repair only affects your home folder.

Did you get that message when you ran the first part of this article: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder - Apple Support

Barney, Thanks for your reply. I was trying to repair permissions in my home folder. I could not access my files.

I decided to re-install Mac OS, that has worked a beaut, everything now running as should. Cheers
