Desktop icon spacing - bigger gap on the left of desktop

FWIW, I didn't know that was the case until your post since I don't keep icons on my Desktop. The gap seems to be related to whether you have the labels displayed on the bottom or the right. They are much closer to the left of the screen when set to the right.

Resetting Finder and changing grid spacing doesn't help.

also interesting Apple has no toggle for left label position, near noticed, never tried and I use the Desktop extensively.

Control click in on the desktop>show view options:

I can say Apples default Desktop location is right side of the Desktop. This was set in stone many years ago contrary to Windows which defaults to the left Desktop 😉
