switching faces

suddenly cannot switch faces by swiping; but can order a different face via iPhone; is there a setting I don't know about that prevents changing face at the watch? I have several face options.

The app on iphone does not allow for a face change on series 9 after recent update to10.0.2 -all software up to date on phone and watch Apple watch 9 -did a recent update and the app on the phone will not set the default face when selected . If one holds the button on side of the watch it opens but then defaults to just numbers. Before the update it worked where if one lifted ones hand it showed the default time face. Now it is not even acting like a watch where one can see the time ?.
