FMiP not locating both airpods

I lost an airpod yesterday and would like to see the last location of it from the Find my iphone app - I do have the case and the right airpod with me still. For some reason, when i play the sound on the airpods from the app, the "mute left" and "mute right" buttons are greyed out and unavailable to me. When i pop my right airpod into the case and refresh the app, it still only shows me the location of the right airpod (with me) - so the app is really no use in locating the one that is actually missing. Is there a way around this, how could i see the last location of the airpod that is not with me?
