thank you! It's a mid 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro.
What is the logic board? I was wondering if I might need a new battery but not sure this one is removable. Thanks for your reply!

That's the one I have, as long as yours is the non-Retina version with an optical (CD/DVD) drive slot.

The logic board is really just the main board that contains most of the electronics. Traditionally it would be called a motherboard or perhaps a mainboard. For this machine it would contain the processor and most of the critical electronics including the memory sockets. Everything connects to it, including the battery.

My experiences include one time I connected an unauthorized Lightning to USB cable (probably not a good idea) and the entire machine just stopped working and for about 10 seconds the lights flashed before shutting off completely. I couldn't do anything including, power up, force a power down (by holding the power button down), etc. The MagSafe light changed colors until it shut off completely. The battery indicator lights didn't turn on when I pressed the button. The fan shut off and all the lights were off. I did hear a faint electronic buzzing sound coming from where the board was. I tried going to an Apple Store without an appointment (couldn't get one for 3 days) and was told that I could be put on the daily waiting list in the morning.

At that point I had never opened up the case before, even though Apple considers a RAM swap or a drive change to be a DIY job, complete with instructions. I looked those up, but also 3rd party instructions that use real photos rather than just line drawings. Many of those other instructions might have other recommendations that Apple doesn't have, including disconnecting the battery connector from the main board. It was easy, but really should be done by someone comfortable doing it.

I'll just say that Apple doesn't consider the battery to be user serviceable. There's a big sticker on the battery saying as such. That being said, anyone who has seen what it looks like would say that's kind of odd since it's just a few screws to remove/replace and isn't terribly complicated other than using a nonstandard screw head that requires a specialty screwdriver But the connector is easy. If you're curious how this is done, there are plenty of teardown or self-repair guides online. I'm not going to link any of them.

y_p_w Thank you so much for the very helpful answer. I will take it to a tech as soon as I can. I live in a small town and not sure if anyone here can fix this. I don't think this will be a DIY job for me even though I pretty sure I have the tools you are talking about. Probably the same ones that came with iphone battery replacement. I was on my phone twice with Apple Chat support and never received a reply to get the chat started and it said it would start within 5 minutes.

Thanks again for you detailed reply! I appreciate it much and will keep you posted on what I do and what happens.
