Upgraded from series 0 which I’ve used to unlock older Macs running Sierra. Why isn’t the unlock backwards compatible for older operating system? Is that too much to ask?

I’ll check it out when I have the chance, but the security option keeps telling me I need to upgrade OS. The Mac Mini serves exclusively as a DVR and its legacy software prevents me from taking OS any further.
The Series watches appears in the "Security and Privacy" tab but gives me this message when I try to add Series 5 watch. The Mac Mini is Late 2014 with latest Sierra update. So what Mac software update do I need?
