How can I retrieve an i message sent more than 12 months ago?

Hi, I need to retrieve an important i message that was sent to me last year but I can't access anything older than 12 months ago. This is despite having my settings set to forever. Can anyone help? Thanks!

iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 12

It depends when did you change the settings to - forever!

That's a good question! I think it was set on that from the time I got my phone in May 2018. But I can only see messages from December 2018 onwards.
