Whats the Audio File editor for?
Just a quick one, been a Logic user for a few years now, never used the Audio File Editor, whats it for exactly? I mean in a nutshell.
I do all my editing the the track space.

Everything has its use.
If I was given a particularly bad recording that had tons of clicks and pops in it, I'd clean the actual file up destructively so that from then on, wherever that piece of recorded audio was used, it'll be clean.
Destructive editing of audio files.
No you can't. In the Main Window you're dealing with Regions only. Audio Regions are small "windows" pointing to a physical audio file. The Audio File Editor is for advanced edits on the audio file itself. Again, if you don't understand its purpose, stay away from it.

First of all, Audio file editors have been around since the earliest days of computer audio, and if you know what you're doing, there is nothing better for precision audio work. A lot of audio editing has been replaced by automated procedures which do a generally ok generic job but with practice much finer work can be done in the Audio Editor.
If you don't know what the Audio File Editor is for, then it is a good thing you don't use it.

I will start to experiment with it, after making a copy of the audio track by bouncing in place to be safe.
