In order for a message to be sent as an iMessage (blue) both parties must be logged into iMessage and have an active data connection. Not everyone who uses an iPhone uses iMessage so, perhaps some of the people you're messaging who have iPhones have chosen not to. Or, it's possible that, at times, even people who do use iMessage don't have an active data connect so that it defaults back to SMS.

It can be as simple as losing the data connection for a minute or two. During that time, the messages would be sent as SMS.

If this is something that's only happening occasionally, I wouldn't worry about it.

I just notice above that you say you have "sms off". There is no way to turn SMS off from your phone. The only way to do that is through your carrier and, if you'd done that, the messages wouldn't be sent green (SMS).

There is no setting on the iPhone that will turn off SMS. There is a setting that you turn on or off that will send an SMS to an iMessage use if the iMessage fails. It has zero effect on sending messages to people not using iMessage.

If you can't send SMS messages, contact your carrier.
